Beshligaii Adsitdii (1845-1947), was a well known Navajo headman, a famous silversmith and medicineman. After his return from Ft. Sumner, he dedicated his life to the preservation of his people, the land, the cerimonial ways and bridging the gap between the Whiteman and his people. Traveling to Washington D.C. to seek peace between the cowboy/settlers and Navajos, he had the President of the United States Theodore Roosevelt annex what is today the Western Navajo Reservation.
Clyde Peshlakai (1885-1972), was also a silversmith and medicineman, who carried on the work of his father, working on the land claims for his people, to the last years of his life. He was the instrument behind the creation of the Navajo Show at the Museum of Northern Arizona. He co-authored the Original Navajo History printed by the Rough Rock Demonstration School.
Jameson "Sonny" Peshlakai (1979-1999), was an acomplished musician, traditional and ceremonial dancer who performed and shared his culture and heritage with many in our time. He traveled nationally and internationally with his family, dance groups, and the Arizona Office of Tourism. Our gradtitude of his time with us has prompted the creation of a foundation in his honor and memory, we have dedicated the Grand Canyon Annual Hoop Dance Contest to his dance in the beauty way of life. |
